Charlie Brown and Republicans
By Chance Gibson
As children, we all wondered why Charlie Brown always fell for Lucy’s football prank. Time after time, she would assure him that she would not pull the football away. And, time after time, Charlie Brown would finally succumb, get up a head of steam, and at the last moment Lucy would snatch the ball away only to have Charlie Brown sail through the air and land with a THUMP. As children we wondered how, after being tricked 783 times, he could possibly fall for it again. Alas, Charlie wanted something so badly that history and common sense could not allow him to see the light.
Now, as adults, Charlie Brown has been replaced by Republicans and Lucy by Democrats. After decades of having “the football” pulled away and land flat on their backs, why do Republicans insist on jettisoning historical reference and common sense when dealing with their political foes? The two most recent examples of this jackassery are the call for “unity” and raising the debt ceiling.
To be certain, the events of Tucson were a tragedy. That said, Republicans cannot allow themselves to again play the role of Charlie Brown as the Democrats, and their willing accomplices in the media, hijack the tragedy for political gain. This new “call for unity and civility” is just the Democrats’ way of snatching the football away. For more than a week now, we’ve heard comments from the left like, “Calling Obamacare what it is will create a climate of hostility” and “how uncivil to threaten a government shutdown”. Well, I say unto those trumpeting this message, “Bring it on!”
Listen very clearly Republicans: We DO NOT WANT UNITY. Did you not get the message in November? We tried to make it so clear, even a politician could understand it. We sent a new batch to Congress to stop over-burdensome regulatory, cut spending, and stop/reverse the loss of freedom and liberty. We don’t want you singing cumbaya at the State of The Union. Where is your backbone? Why in the world would you (Republicans) dilute the strength in numbers we allotted you in November by an unprecedented act on the national stage? Are you (Republicans) afraid of success? Do you (Republicans) not have the courage of your convictions? Make no mistake, we sent you to Washington, and we can send you home again if you fail to carry out our wishes. We sent you there to take a sledge-hammer to an ideological machine that sees The Constitution as “a document of negative rights” (Obama). We don’t want repeal and replace, we want repeal and leave us the hell alone.
As if our $14 trillion dollar debt – actually over $50 trillion when Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid are included – were not bad enough, we are now told Congress must raise the debt ceiling or risk a government shut-down. Does anyone outside of Washington, who is not a welfare recipient, care? I know I won’t be ill-affected one ounce if 100,000 non-essential bureaucrats stay home. In fact, I would prefer it. And, just out of curiosity, why must the debt ceiling be raised rather than cutting spending to match revenue? That’s what the rest of us do. At what point do we draw a line in the sand and make the distinction between ‘must haves’ vs. ‘nice to haves’? By no stretch of the imagination does the federal budget need to be $2.5 trillion dollars annually (over $8,300 for every man, woman, and child in America). In that figure there’s some waste. Congress, how about taking a couple of days to actually locate it?
Repubicans, stop trying to be liked by those who despise you. You work for us – not the media, not the insurance companies, and not the union bosses. We provided crystal clear directions in November, and they did not include “unity”, “a more civil tone”, and certainly not increasing our debt. Step into the ideological ring and crush those who been crushing our freedom and liberty. Never retreat and demand unconditional surrender.
Chance Gibson, your message is dead-on and couldn’t have been articulated more clearly. Let’s hope the Republican Congress is listening.
No more RINOs! After the last election, the people have spoken. The most important work of Congress is to undo the previous cancerous work of Congress. Say for instance, dismantling the departments of agriculture, education, energy, homeland secutiry and FEMA. Drop any funding OR ADVERTISING of GM, Chrysler or the U.S. Postal Service. Let them succeed — or fail — without government intervention. Let the free enterprise system prevail!
Great article!
